We are a diverse student team from Clausthal University of Technology that has been taking part in the international Drillbotics competition since 2017 and which deals with topics such as directional drilling, automation and downhole instrumentation. We have won the competition twice in recent years. Since the winter semester 24/25, we have been supporting the SG Rover Team of the TU Braunschweig in the design and construction of the Deep Sampling Device (DSD) of their Mars Rover for the ERC.
What do we do?
Our main focus is on the automation of directional drilling systems and the development of innovative robotic solutions. In addition to the design and manufacture of mechanical components (e.g. BHA), we work on the optimization and development of algorithms and systems that are necessary for the control and monitoring of complex drilling rigs. These systems are essential for the safe, efficient and precise execution of drilling processes.
In addition to our research work, we regularly take part in national and international drilling conferences, both in Germany and worldwide. This gives us the opportunity to expand our network in the industry, establish contacts with leading companies and raise our profile.
Our involvement prepares us optimally for professional life, as we have the opportunity to apply our theoretical knowledge in real projects, learn about new concepts and gain experience. At the same time, we actively contribute to the organization and implementation of events.
New for this semester is a cooperation with the SG Rover Team of the TU Braunschweig, where we will design and construct the Deep Sampling Device (DSD) of the Mars rover ORTHOS. A new challenge for our team! For the first time, we have to work with volume, current and center of gravity budgets. The goal is to extract, analyze and transport a 100 gram sample without mixing from >300 mm depth from simulated Martian regolith. The DSD module will compete together with ORTHOS at the international European Rover Challenge in Krakow.
Our team covers many different areas of expertise:
- Mechanical engineering: design of components and their integration into the systems
- Computer science: development of graphical user interfaces (GUI) and control systems
- Electronics: working on embedded systems and microcontroller applications
- Petroleum Engineering: implementation of new drilling technologies and concepts from the industry
- Business and management: team leadership, marketing, sponsor acquisition and project management
